Artist's Statement

My inspiration comes from nature, the way the light falls on a petal, or the subtle shift of color and form. I like to look for the things that perhaps go unnoticed and observe the intricacy of texture and lighting. Watercolor fascinates me with its ability to transform a blank sheet of paper to an intricate play of colors and shapes.

When painting with watercolor, I use a technique of layering thin washes, overlapping areas, and leaving other areas alone. The first layers of color applied influence all the additional layers. For example, if I lay a layer of yellow down first, it affects the subsequent layers of color. Although it may not be obvious, it is still there. I equate this to a person’s life. Our early experiences are there under all the additional years of experiences and affect a person’s thoughts and feelings. Although the early experiences are not evident in one’s daily life, they are still there under all the layers.
